Light Tackle

Light Tackle Fishing in Northern Thailand

Fishing with either bait casting, level wind reels, or with light tackle spinning rods and reels is the predominant method. Due to the thick brush along shore and submerged trees under the surface, most angling is done with surface lures designed to imitate either frogs or small bait fish.

The action is usually visual when a fish takes the lure. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and subsurface lures are often used in areas where the locals know there are no submerged trees.

All casts must be very accurate and the lure must land close to the brush (structure) or into open pockets in the brush where the larger Snakeheads make their home. Very often you can see Snakeheads feeding deep within the brush along shore, but there is no way to get a lure into them. The retrieve must be very fast to entice the wary Snakehead into striking.
