Locations & Fishing

Gone fishing....
Asian Angling Adventures only offers fishing trips to natural waters or reservoirs in Northern Thailand. All locations are within 30 minutes to 4 hours drive from Chiang Mai.
Sirikit
Sirikit is Thailand’s 4th largest reservoir. Constructed in 1974, Sirikit dams the Nan river, which is one of the 3 major rivers in northern Thailand. The reservoir is in Uttaradit province and covers 240 sq.km. The reservoir is 55km long and 22kms wide, with hundreds of islands, tiny bays and inlets. Sirikit Dam is named after Her Highness, Queen Sirikit of Thailand.

Sirikit is our premier Giant Snakehead location, where fish of +10 kg. are caught regularly. Sirikit is a 4 hour drive south-east of Chiang Mai, or a convenient 1 hour drive from Sukothai.
Bhumipol (Tha Ko-Doi Tao)
Bhumipol Reservoir is named after his Royal Highness King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and stretches through 3 provinces; Chiang Mai, Lampun and Tak. The reservoir dams the Ping River, which is the main tributary of the Chaopraya river, Thailand’s largest river.

The reservoir is 124 km long from north to south and has some of Thailand’s most remote locations, for both fishing and recreation. The largest portion of the reservoir is within Ping River National Park, one of the largest national parks in Thailand. The park features semi-dry forest and canyons, and well as countless water falls in the rainy season. Ping River National Park has a large population of various monkeys and other wildlife. The variety of bird species is astounding.
In the Bhumipol Reservoir we target both Giant Snakehead and Jungle Perch, the latter being the prime target. We fish two parts of the reservoir, Doi Tao 1.5 hours drive south of Chiang Mai and Tha Ko, 2.5 hours drive south of Chiang Mai.
Mae Ngat
Mae Ngat reservoir lies within Sri Lanna National Park, 40 km. north of Chiang Mai and dams the Ping River.

The reservoir is 28 sq. km and is home to a good population of Jungle Perch and Giant Snakehead. Scenic Mae Ngat reservoir can be reached in less than an hours drive from Chiang Mai. Thick tropical vines tumble down high cliffs, and secluded inlets form sanctuaries for both Snakehead and Jungle Perch. Often, the rustling of wildlife on shore, and the singing of the birds are the only noise in the silence of the reservoir.
Mae Kuang
Mae Kuang reservoir dams the Kuang river, a tributary of the Ping River This small reservoir is often described by local anglers as the “University of Giant Snakehead”, due to their often finicky behavior. Mae Kuang has got some the largest Giant Snakeheads in Thailand, but they are smart and wary. Fish over 12kg have been caught but the more common size is 1 to 2 kgs.. The reservoir is only 30 min. drive from Chiang Mai and is an excellent choice for a days fishing.
Kiow Lom
Kiow Lom reservoir dams the Wang river in Lampang Province. It is a small but beautiful reservoir, and fishes best during the Hot Season (March through May). It has a good population of Jungle Perch, which by is often said by locals to be stronger and put up more fight, then comparable Jungle Perches anywhere else. A small population of Striped Snakehead are also present in this reservoir. Kiow Lom is located 1.5 hours drive south east of Chiang Mai.
Secret lakes of the north………..
We keep a fair number of smaller sized lakes and reservoir secret, as they may not handle a large number of anglers. We do custom kayak trips to over 15 small reservoirs north of Chiang Mai, and in provinces of Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan and Lampang. Those trips are often very memorable due to the diversity of both fishing and cultural proximity with locals. Both Snakeheads and Jungle Perch are the fish of the venues.
